Brideshead Revisted

Brideshead Revisted

A brave, but very discreet depiction of homosexuality in pre-WW II. It took more than 100 pages for me to realize that Sebastian and Charles were more than buddies. The most striking element of the book is the conflict on Catholic religion, which had nothing to do with homosexuality. The language is very (old) English, not an easy read but the conflicts on family dynamics, self identity, religion, and sexuality will strike a chord with the reader.

47 Ronin

47 Ronin

It is a short read of less than 200 pages, which surprised me! I guess you can't really expound much on a story when you know everyone dies in the end. Even if that were the case, it is a great story, and strangely enough, it was still a feel good ending. There are many versions of the story of the 47 Ronin, the movie is very different from the book!

Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker

Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker

I was expecting the story to be centered around conversations between Mrs. Lincoln and Mrs. Keckly but it turned out to be more like a history book that reads like a novel. Not a bad read, but when you have a title like this, one expects to be in on the scoop between the First Couple and their loyal servant. I guess people were more discreet back then. It is not a "tell all" book!

The Hand of Fatima

The Hand of Fatima

Action filled, and very graphic! I read the translated version, because no lee espanol! I purchased a couple of copies to lend to friends, who enjoyed the story as much as I did. In fact, I never got it back! However, the ending (spoiler alert!) was anti-climactic! But still highly recommended and very interesting especially the history of the Moors and the Christians in Spain during the early 16th century.

A Suitable Boy

A Suitable Boy

SOOO surprised that an author from one the most techy-iest countries like India does not have an E-book version of this boulder of a book. I carried the soft bound (thank G it was soft bound!) to three continents, South America, Europe, and Asia. Not sure if it was worth the excess weight because it was not as interesting as I hoped it to be. After reading more than 1500 pages, with chapters unrelated to each other, I decided NOT to proceed with A Suitable Girl.

The Light Between Oceans

The Light Between Oceans

A mystery without the thrill. The story takes you to a life in a light house, an ocean away from a tiny populated town in Australia. As a reader, you are in on the secret of Tom and Isabel and how it all unfolds. Their story will make you wonder what you would have done if your were in their shoes.

Wild Swans

Wild Swans

Interesting story/biography of three generations of women from pre-Mao era to the 20th century, but story mostly revolved around the Mao era. It is always interesting to read about other people's lives especially when a bit of history is mixed into the story.

Eat, Pray, Love

Eat, Pray, Love

It's one of those books that you either hate it, or you love it! I am one of the latter and have given away this book to several girl (and gay) friends! There is so much of Liz's character in us, especially those in our 40s, and who have been married at least once! I think one of the main reasons why some readers hate this book so much, it is because they see their obnoxious side in Liz. I know I did but I truly enjoyed the book!
